Why We Must Boycott
Three million people took to the streets to denounce Trump and his radical policies the day after his inauguration. It was a powerful show of solidarity, but red-state Republican congressmen don’t care about protests in Democratic strongholds. But if those same three million people and allies like you and I join CitizenVeto, we can reach into their districts and states to undermine the support that keeps them in power.
Our Greatest Power
Every dollar we spend is a vote just as powerful as the votes we cast in the last election. Do you care what impact those dollars have? Democratic countries impose economic sanctions on rogue states that threaten international order. Is it wrong to use our own money to defend our rights as American citizens? If we show the rogue Republican Party that we’re willing to disrupt the flow of money into their campaigns they will fall into line even faster than they fell in behind their corrupt leader. Do nothing and we are enabling them to recast our government into whatever autocratic form Trump’s unbridled self interest dictates.
Republican leaders in Congress respect power and power alone, and we the majority of Americans who believe in democracy and civil liberties still hold the ultimate power in this country. Why did not a single celebrity agree to perform at Trump’s inauguration? Some for personal political reasons, certainly, but not all. The reason not a single A-list performer was willing to show up for Trump is that they were afraid of offending all of us—their fans and paying customers. Those who depend on the good graces of American consumers for their livelihoods respect and fear the economic power of people like you and me.
Republicans have systematically manipulated district boundaries and rigged voter registration rules to steal our votes. But they depend on our money to keep their game going.
Reckless Donors
Republican Party donors spent their money recklessly. They paid for tax breaks and favorable regulation without regard for how the extremists they helped put into power would affect the lives of their own customers—people like you and me. They failed to communicate to their political toadies that we would not tolerate an outright attack on basic democratic principles. Their negligence is not acceptable. Send them that message loud and clear, give them no alternative, and they will join our fight against the Republicans’ radical, anti-democratic agenda.
Access And Influence
Companies and their executives make donations to politicians for one simple reason. They pay for access and influence, so when they have a problem they bring it directly to their congressman, and they expect results. We need to make that access and influence work for us for a change. Boycott the companies that donate to the Republican Party—threaten their livelihoods—and you can bet they will bring that problem to the Republicans’ front door. If the donors on our current boycott list want to regain our trust, they need to cease all contributions to the Republican Party until it meets our demands to defend the Constitution.
How much of a threat to its business will a company endure before screaming at their Republican representatives and cutting off their money? Maybe even less than you think. Like the A-list celebrities that skipped the inauguration, those who sell their products to a broad consumer base can’t afford a sudden drop in sales, the loss of loyal customers, and the taint of being forever associated with anti-American values.
